Kiln-Dried Ash Logs

Ash is great to use as firewood as it has similar properties to oak. It is slightly less dense, but is extremely popular as it burns for a very long time with a steady heat and creates very few sparks, making it a safe option for fireplaces and log burners. It also completely burns through, leaving a clean ash.

We put our seasoned hardwood ash and firewood in stillages or in open piles in the sun for as long as we can, which we then finish off in the kiln. This provides a super dry product (i.e. around 15% MC or moisture content) with minimum usage of fuel for drying. The kiln is powered by logs too, usually tree surgery waste or wood that is of inferior quality to the sales product.

In general, the advantages to using very dry wood are that there is less smoke, a higher heat output, less ash, less corrosion to metal flues or expensive appliances and less pollution due to better cracking of the wood gases.
